information sources
Switchwise uses pricing and product information obtained from energy retailers directly and/or from information published on energy suppliers' websites or in state government gazettes. Our calculator uses the information you provide to us on our search form and makes a number of assumptions to arrive at an estimate of your costs and potential savings.
calculating savings
Each electricity and gas provider has different discounts or bonuses, and the Switchwise calculator deducts this from the cost to give you an apples with apples comparison among different suppliers. Discounts or bonuses usually include a discount for paying bills on time, rewards for bundling your electricity and gas with one supplier, paying by monthly debit and/or agreeing to manage your account online and receive bills electronically.
Some suppliers might also include non-monetary benefits, for example a free gift, but these are not incorporated into the calculator because Switchwise believes their value to be too subjective.

compare using your power and gas bills
We strongly recommend that you get copies of your latest gas and electricity bills (preferably 12 months of bills) and enter the information into
our search form to get the most accurate results. The most important information to provide is:
- Your electricity/gas use for the period (in kwh/GJ); and
- Your total bill amount for the period (including discounts but excluding concessions).
