Country Energy to offload NSW gas network

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Country Energy, the NSW Government-owned energy retailer and distributor, yesterday announced its decision to sell the gas network it operates in southern New South Wales.

The Country Energy gas network supplies natural gas to Southern NSW towns including Wagga Wagga, Tumut, Adelong, Cooma, Bombala and Gundagai through 1,100 kilometres of distribution mains and 65 kilometres of transmission pipelines.

According to the company, the decision to dispose of the gas network was taken as operating the gas network is not core business for Country Energy. The timing of this announcement is interesting given that the whole of Country Energy is on the block as part of the NSW Government’s privatisation process. However, as we reported on 20 February, the NSW Government placed the privatisation process on hold until least the end of June.

Energy companies AGL and Origin Energy are the most obvious buyers as they already operate the main gas networks in NSW. However, as both these companies are bidders in the NSW privatisation process one might reasonably question their appetite at this point in time. ActewAGL, the joint venture between AGL and ACTEW, might also be a potential buyer given its strong presence in Southern NSW.

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Today ActewAGL joins the Switchwise supplier panel. Consumers will now be able to compare, select and switch to ActewAGL’s electricity, gas and dual-fuel plans directly from the Switchwise website.

If you don’t already know, ActewAGL is the main energy and water supplier in the ACT; it was established in October 2000 as a joint venture between AGL Energy and ACTEW Corporation, which is an ACT Government-owned enterprise.

ActewAGL is now supplying customers in Southern New South Wales. If you live in the shires of Bega Valley, Bombala, Boorowa, Cooma-Monaro, Eurobodella, Goulburn, Harden, Palerang, Shoalhaven, Snowy River, Tumut, Upper Lachlan, Yarrolumla, Yass Valley or Young there are now some great discounts available to encourage you to make the switch from your current provider.

To find a great ActewAGL plan for you, compare your current energy supplier’s prices and plans by entering your postcode and usage information into our search form.

Parliament House decides GreenPower is too expensive

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

The Department of Parliamentary Services, which is responsible for running Parliament House in Canberra, decided to purchase electricity from ActewAGL but only with 10% accredited GreenPower. Apparently the 100% GreenPower option was deemed too expensive and no further funds were made available.

It would have been nice to see the Federal Government “walk the walk” and lead by example by buying 100% GreenPower, especially given the incredible amount of electricity that Parliament House must consume in a year. This seriously makes me question the Rudd Government’s commitment to renewable energy and climate change.
