Each State and Territory of Australia is serviced by different electricity distributors, most of which were previously Government owned organisations that were privatised as part of the deregulation process.

Electricity distributors deliver power from the power grid into homes and businesses. In Australia there are currently 16 electricity distributors, covering most of the populated areas of the country. Distributors own and maintain the poles and wires, which are the means of transporting electricity to consumers, as well as the electricity meters that measure your electricity usage.

Electricity distributors are responsible for the quality and reliability of your power supply. If there is an emergency, an interruption to your power supply or an electrical fault it is the electricity distributor's responsibility to fix it.

Customers should know that distributors are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and should be contacted immediately if there is an electrical fault or emergency.
