In summer, many Australians use air conditioners to keep cool. There are many ways you can reduce your dependence on such an energy intensive appliance:
- Set the temperature on the air conditioner to around 23°C or above
- Close blinds to keep out the sun, especially on north-facing windows
- Open up the house to any cool breezes
- Use ceiling fans where possible - they are cheaper to run than air conditioners
- Good insulation keeps the heat out in summer as well as keeping the heat in during winter
- Seal the gaps of the house in windows, floors and walls to keep out the heat
- Light colours reflect heat whilst dark colours absorb heat: think about this when choosing colours for your house walls, roofing and even blinds and curtains
- Choose a reflective rooftop insulation to repel a lot of the sun's heat
