In summer, many Australians use air conditioners to keep cool. There are many ways you can reduce your dependence on such an energy intensive appliance:

  • Set the temperature on the air conditioner to around 23°C or above
  • Close blinds to keep out the sun, especially on north-facing windows
  • Open up the house to any cool breezes
  • Use ceiling fans where possible - they are cheaper to run than air conditioners
  • Good insulation keeps the heat out in summer as well as keeping the heat in during winter
  • Seal the gaps of the house in windows, floors and walls to keep out the heat
  • Light colours reflect heat whilst dark colours absorb heat: think about this when choosing colours for your house walls, roofing and even blinds and curtains
  • Choose a reflective rooftop insulation to repel a lot of the sun's heat
