company overview
Country Energy was a large gas and electricity provider, with more than 4,000 employees and close to 900,000 customers. Country Energy was also an energy distributor, owning around 200,000 kilometres of powerlines and 1.4 million power poles throughout the country. Until March 2011 they were both owned by the NSW Government.
Country Energy was owned by the NSW Government until March 2011 when the retail part of the business, including the Country Energy brand, was acquired by Origin Energy. The distribution network part of the business was retained by the NSW Government and was rebranded Essential Energy. Country Energy has been maintained as a separate brand but it is expected that it will be rolled fully into Origin Energy over the next 12 to 24 months.
Country Energy has a decentralised approach to supplying energy, with different plans and structures depending on the customer's location. As well as being a utilities provider, Country Energy also provides some customers with water supplies, internet services and energy management.
In New South Wales, Country Energy also offers natural gas and LPG services, which are much cleaner sources of energy. They produce nearly three quarters less greenhouse gas emissions than electricity power that comes from coal generators.
