company overview
Horizon Power operates WA's remote electricity supply systems and some local generation facilities and retails electricity to almost 30,000 customers in the Kimberley, Gascoyne, Mid West and southern Goldfields (Esperance and Hopetown). Horizon Power is owned by the State Government of Western Australia.
Horizon Power generates some electricity from renewable sources, including wind power in coastal areas and small scale solar power schemes. Due to the remote locations of its power stations and customers, Horizon Power is in a good position to become a global leader in the facilitation of renewable energy across large distances. Due to the massive distances in rural and regional areas of Western Australia, residents are particularly hard hit by oil price rises so they have the greatest incentive to invest in natural sources of energy like wind and solar power.
Horizon Power was created as a result of the Western Australian Government's State-wide deregulation of the energy industry. Horizon had originally been a part of Western Power but in 2000 that company was split into four businesses that specialised in different areas of the energy industry. They are involved with a range of projects to improve their service to customers.
