about switching

can energy suppliers change their prices?

Currently, all energy suppliers offer plans that have variable pricing. This means that they have the right to change prices at least once per year by providing you with sufficient advance notice in writing. However, there are now a couple of plans available that do offer fixed prices for 2 or 3 years. We at Switchwise do not believe such plans offer good value at this time as the prices charged are usually much higher than current variable rates. In other words, these fixed plans assume power and gas prices will rise by a certain percentage over the 2 or 3 year fixed period and build in that increase to today's prices.

If you are unhappy with any price change you should consider switching to another provider. However, it is important to note that suppliers generally increase their prices around the same time each year (in July or January, depending on where you live) in accordance with the regulated price path agreed with the relevant State or Territory Government.
