Comparing energy suppliers and arranging your switch to a new provider is now quick and easy. If your newly chosen energy supplier is one for which we can accept online applications, it only takes a few minutes to complete your application to switch! For other energy suppliers you will need to contact them directly or visit their website to apply to switch.
Once you have submitted your application to switch the actual transfer process from your current retailer to your new retailer could take up to 3 months to complete. Why so long? To ensure an accurate final and opening meter reading for your current and new suppliers respectively, your switch of supplier only occurs when your meter is actually read by your local distributor(s). As electricity meters are usually read every 3 months and gas meters every 3 months (2 months in Victoria) your switch might take up to 3 months to complete depending on where you are in your billing cycle at the time you apply to switch. Some retailers might decide to speed up the process by arranging for a special meter read; once your application is approved by your new supplier they will advise you of the estimated date on which they expect your electricity and/or gas accounts to be transferred to them.
It is important to note that electricity meters and gas meters are usually read by different companies at different times so your electricity and gas accounts will most likely be transferred on different dates unless your new supplier arranges special meter reads for both fuels on the same date.
If you switch suppliers please DO NOT contact your current supplier to cancel your agreement with them. This could mean your power and gas being disconnected! Your new supplier will notify your current supplier as part of the transfer process - you don't need to do anything!

If you are moving home the rules above do not apply - your electricity connection and/or gas connection with your new supplier(s) should occur on your selected move-in date, provided you have given sufficient notice to your new supplier.
