Before you start comparing energy plans using the Switchwise calculator, there are some things you should know:
the switchwise calculator
The Switchwise calculator does not show every plan for every supplier. Click here to read more.
The Switchwise calculator makes a number of assumptions. For example, we assume that you will be eligible for all discounts and bonuses associated with each available plan. Click here to read more about the assumptions we make.
accuracy of results
Switchwise prides itself on providing the accurate results based on the information you provide to us on our search form. You will get the most accurate estimate if you provide us with 12 months usage information from recent bills. We can provide cost and savings estimates with less information. However, if, for example, we do not know whether you have a single-rate meter or a time of day meter, the estimates may not be as accurate. Click here for further information on our calculations and results.
The costs and savings for suppliers' plans are sometimes shown as a range because more information is required to more accurately determine the tariffs relevant to your property.
loss of statutory protection
In certain States, if you are currently on a regulated contract (also called a non-market contract, a standard contract or a standing offer contract) the maximum tariffs you could be charged is set by state government regulations. If you switch energy suppliers you will change to a market contract and you may lose this protection. However, in most cases you can switch back to a non-market contract should you later decide you no longer want to be on a market contract.
You may be on a regulated plan if you have never switched supplier since retail competition was introduced in your state or territory or you are still supplied by the regulated retailer in your area. If in doubt contact your current retailer to find out more about the type of contract you have.
