There are 10 gas distributors in Australia; they own the gas pipeline network and supply gas to meet household needs. Each State & Territory receives gas from different distributors. Distributors are also responsible for the quality and reliability of the natural gas that is enjoyed in the home.

Distributors transport large volumes of gas, at high pressure from a number of locations around the country, including the Carnarvon Basin (NW Western Australia), the Gippsland Basin (Victoria's SE coast), Bass Strait, the Otway Basin and the Cooper and Eromanga Basins (on the borders of South Australia and Queensland). These reserves service 3.4 million residential homes via 75,000 kilometres of underground pipes.
