There are 10 gas distributors in Australia; they own the gas pipeline network and supply gas to meet household needs. Each State & Territory receives gas from different distributors. Distributors are also responsible for the quality and reliability of the natural gas that is enjoyed in the home.
Distributors transport large volumes of gas, at high pressure from a number of locations around the country, including the Carnarvon Basin (NW Western Australia), the Gippsland Basin (Victoria's SE coast), Bass Strait, the Otway Basin and the Cooper and Eromanga Basins (on the borders of South Australia and Queensland). These reserves service 3.4 million residential homes via 75,000 kilometres of underground pipes.
actewagl
ActewAGL was established in October 2000 as a joint venture between the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL), and ACTEW Corporation (an ACT Government owned enterprise). ActewAGL distributes and retails natural gas to customers in ACT, Nowra, Bomaderry and Queanbeyan.

agl gas networks
AGL began distributing gas in 1976 and now provides gas to Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong as well as some regional areas. The majority of their gas comes from the Cooper and Eromanga Basin gas regions.

alinta gas
Alinta is the sole distributor in Western Australia and the company services more than 530,000 domestic, commercial and industrial customers. The company has three distribution networks: the Mid-West and South-West Gas Distribution System, feeding the greater metropolitan area of Perth. The Kalgoorlie Distribution Network services customers in Kalgoorlie-Boulder from gas transported by the Goldfields Gas Transmission Pipeline. Finally the Albany Distribution Network,provides LPG to Albany from a LPG plant.

country energy
Country Energy is owned by the New South Wales Government. It serves more than 870,000 customers and employs around 4,000 people. It provides natural gas to towns including Wagga Wagga, Tumut, Adelong, Cooma, Bombala and Gundagai.

envestra
Envestra owns 1,000km of gas transmission pipelines and 20,000km of natural gas distribution networks. They service one million consumers in South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. In NSW Envestra provides natural gas to Albury and other townships near the New South Wales and Victorian border. In Victoria they distribute gas to Mildura. In Roma and Dalby, local government authorities distribute and retail natural gas.

United Energy is responsible for supplying close to 1.5 million domestic customers in Victoria with gas through 25,303km of mains. Industrial and commercial consumers accounted for 46.8 percent of gas sales in 2001/02.

SPI Networks own and manage distribution of gas and electricity to over one million customers.
Their electricity distribution network delivers electricity to approximately 575,000 customer supply points in an area of more than 80,000 square kilometres in eastern Victoria.
Their gas distribution network delivers gas to some 504,000 customer supply points in an area of more than 60,000 square kilometres in the centre and west of the State.

tas gas networks
New Zealand-owned company Tas Gas Networks (formerly Powerco) is the distributor of natural gas in Tasmania. The company operates as a gas distributor within the State, and also owns Tas Gas Retail, which sells directly to consumers and businesses.
