company overview
Alinta Limited is a major Australian energy company with interests comprising energy generation, transmission, distribution and retailing. Alinta, or Alinta Gas as it was previously known, was originally owned by the Government of Western Australia. When the State Energy Commission of WAwas broken-up in 1998, Alinta Gas was privatised and sold.
As well as providing natural gas, Alinta has been able to capitalise on the WA Government's partial deregulation of the state's electricity market and now supplies both gas and electricity to some customers in the State.
The company has operations in five Australian states and New Zealand, and until last year was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange with a market capitalisation of approximately $3 billion. In August 2007 Alinta was purchased by a consortium operated by Babcock & Brown and Singapore Power and was subsequently delisted from the Australian Stock Exchange.
In late 2011 Alinta launched a new retail business called Alinta Energy which has electricity and gas retail licenses in all states where there is retail competition. Alinta has electricity and gas offers in South Australia and Victoria and is expected to expand into other states over the coming year.
